Apple WWDC 19 Event: What to Expect?

WWDC is one of the biggest events in Apple’s calendar. Here’s everything you need to know about WWDC 2019: the dates, times and venue; what to expect; and how to watch online.

What to Expect?

iOS 13

The biggest announcement Apple is going to make is the brand new iOS version. The next-generation version of iOS is rumored to include some useful new features.

Dark Mode, introduced on macOS in Mojave is a long-desired iOS feature, is finally coming in iOS 13, and other features are in the works like a new sleep mode that mutes incoming notifications and darkens the Lock screen.

ios13Changes and updates are coming to several apps, including Mail, Messages, Maps, Reminders, and Health, plus the update will include overall speed improvements and bug fixes.

For the iPad, Apple will be going to introduce a feature for displaying multiple windows in a single iPad app using a tab view, and a multitasking feature for using two windows of the same app side by side. iPad apps will also support stackable, moveable cards within apps.

MacOS 10.15

The next-generation version of macOS, macOS 10.15, will be unveiled at WWDC. There are not many rumors about what changes will the new update bring but Apple is working on a new universal apps feature, which first debuted in macOS Mojave and iOS 12, and will expand to developers in iOS 13 and macOS 10.15.

macos 10.15Apple is aiming at designing a single app that works with either a touchscreen or a mouse and trackpad, based on whether it’s running on iOS or macOS. This universal app feature would likely significantly increase the number of apps available on Macs while also cutting down on developer workload to create cross-platform apps.

Other new features include support for using an iPad as an external display, window snapping, a Siri Shortcuts app, support for Screen Time and iMessage Effects, and a revamped Find My iPhone app.

watchOS 6

watchOS runs on the Apple Watch and has made some huge leaps forward in its first five major updates. Apple has several major features planned that will improve the watchOS operating system. The Apple Watch will also get its own App Store, which will enable users to download apps right from their wrists, which will make the Apple Watch more independent.

apple watchNew health applications are said to be in the works, with Apple set to introduce a “Dose” app for pill reminders and a “Cycles” app for tracking menstrual cycles. Apple plans to add a Calculator app, a Voice Memos app, and an app for listening to audiobooks, plus Animoji and Memoji stickers are coming to the Apple Watch.

New complications will be included in watchOS 6 that will show the status of audiobooks, the battery life of hearing aids, rain data, and the level of external noise.

Mac PRO

There are some rumors Apple is working on a new modular Mac Pro which in development since early 2017, and is set to launch in 2019. Mac Pro will be a high-end high-throughput modular Mac Pro system that will facilitate regular upgrades to meet the needs of Apple’s pro user base.

Apple has not made a firm decision about showing off the Mac Pro at WWDC, but it is still in development and will be released in some time.

tvOS 13

tvOS is the operating system that runs on the fourth-gen and 4K versions of the Apple TV. The most likely topic for discussion is Apple’s plans to start streaming its TV shows via the TV app on various Apple products.

WWDC is a must-watch event if you are a tech enthusiast or just someone who is fascinated by Apple products.

WWDC 2019 dates

WWDC 2019 will run from 3-7 June at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, the same venue as last year.

The event lasts a week and will be packed with useful workshops and networking events for developers, but all the big announcements will be made in a keynote speech, about two hours long, on the first day.

How to watch WWDC 2019

Apple live streams its WWDC’s keynote speech on its website – it will appear on the Special Events page – and then posts the entire video online for later viewing.
