What is Apple Sidecar?
Apple’s Sidecar is a MacOS 10.15 Catalina feature that enables you to turn an iPad into a second display, working alongside your Mac. The feature also allows iPad Pro owners to use their tablet as an input device with an Apple Pencil.
It is a very useful feature for people who need to work on two or more things at once. By increasing the screen size users can keep more programs running in front and can utilize the display of both Mac & iPad.
Here’s how to use Sidecar
Like everything Apple does, enabling Sidecar is very simple and won’t take all day, to get started first check whether your devices are compatible with the feature. Make sure your iPad & Mac are listed below:

If your devices are compatible with the Sidecar feature, make sure all your devices are logged in to the same AppleID and are connected to the same WiFi network.
Now follow these simple steps:
Go to System Preferences (On your Mac)
- Launch System Preferences
- Select Sidecar
- Click ‘Select Device’ under Connect to and choose your iPad
After selecting the iPad you want to use as extended display go to the Menu bar and follow these steps:
- Click the airplay icon in the top right corner of your Mac
- Select your iPad under Connect to
- Move your mouse cursor over your current active window’s full-screen icon in the top left corner of the app
- A menu will appear that includes the option to ‘Move to iPad’

Sidebar feature gives you access to your most commonly used controls, which include modifier keys like Command, Option, Control and Shift to enable shortcuts in supported apps.
Touchbar works similarly to the Touchbar on the MacBook Pro’s, it adds app functions close at hand on the iPad’s display so you don’t have to reach for the keyboard or switch displays.
